Some comments about using open source LBM codes.
1) It is relatively easy to write an LBM code, especially 2D. The "complication" resides in boundary conditions, as in any other methods. Thus, I would suggest those who wish to master the technique to write a code by him/herself. And spend some time to read the paper by Ginzburg, d'Humieres et al. to understand what's going on about BCs.
2) Do not start with LBGK model -- it will waste your time. Start with MRT-LBE. It is not hard, at least not harder than the LBGK.
3) It would help if you understand some basic techniques/theories in CFD. Just remember: no free lunch, and no one can walk on water.
Good luck!
