The LBE can resolve the boundary layer (BL) just as any other 2nd order finite-difference (FD) schemes. One advantage of LBE is that the stress is also 2nd order accurate. However, because it uses a Cartesian mesh, it requires a huge number of grids near walls, and it has to use cut-cell method for curved boundaries -- both are detrimental to the solution of BL. If a wall model is used, it will inherit ALL the problems associated with the wall model. Thus, it may not wise to use the LBE for BL problems in general.
