My understanding of this problem is the following. CFD is both cursed and blessed because: (1) The mathematical problem associated with the Navier-Stokes equations is nowhere near to be solved so there are things to be done; and (2) advance in computer hardware, software, and human experience allow CFD as a useful tool so there are things can be done.
CFD is related to many fields in science: mathematics, applied mathematics, and physics. One thus can pick any sub-field(s) according his/her own interest and inclination. A larger and more relevant question should be: why should someone study hard-core science at all? Why not business and such not?
One particular field which will be active for years to come is "complex and active fluids"....
