Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate in the Aerodynamics Research Group of the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, Manchester University in the United Kingdom. Detailed information about the School may be found at http://www.mace.manchester.ac.uk/ and details of the research group activities (formerly the Fluid Mechanics Research Group) at http://www.eng.man.ac.uk/Aero/fmrg/index.htm.
The posts will be available for a period of 36 months from 1 October 2005. The starting salary will be in the range £19460 - £21640 per annum depending on experience.
If interested, please send your full curriculum vitae to Dr S Zhong via e-mail: shan.zhong@manchester.ac.uk.

>>>roject background
Wake-induced transition typically occurs in multi-stage turbomachine. It affects the aerodynamic performance of turbine and compressor blades considerably. Although the various mechanisms of wake-induced transition have now been identified, the detailed processes are not yet understood. In this project, a novel flow measurement system comprised of two state-of-art techniques (PIV and liquid crystals) will be developed and employed to study the wake-induced transitional events occurring in attached boundary layers and separated boundary layers over a flat plate placed in water flow. The results will be used to develop improved transition prediction models for gas turbine engines.
The work is sponsored by the Engineering Physics Sciences Research Council in the UK and will be undertaken in collaboration with Cambridge University. The research outcome will be disseminated to the industry through regular meetings with Rolls-Royce plc, Demag Delaval Industrial Turbines Ltd and Alstom Power Ltd.
>>>Job description
The job involves design and build of a heater composite test plate, development of the hybrid PIV and liquid crystal flow measurement system, measurement of the characteristics of the boundary layer subjected to a range of prescribed freestream disturbances, and development of hypotheses of the flow phenomenon based on the experimental finding.
>>>erson specification
The applicants are expected to hold a PhD in the broad areas of Aerospace, Civil or Mechanical Engineering and have good research experience in the area of fluid mechanics. Experience of flow measurement techniques such as PIV and hot-wire anemometry would be a major advantage. The ability of setting up an experiment programme, conducting measurements and post processing experimental data independently as well as communicating the research outcome at meetings and conferences effectively is essential.
