FLOW SIMULATION OF FLAPPING WINGS OF AN INSECT USING OVERSET UNSTRUCTURED GRID
AIAA-2001-2619
Flow over a hornet in forward flight is numerically simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations. ^The complex configuration of a hornet, including antennas, legs, and sting, are realistically reconstructed in the computational space by an unstructured grid. ^The flapping wings are treated by the overset unstructured grid method, where an unstructured grid around the wing is overlapped on a stationary grid around the body of the hornet and moves in time to simulate the flapping motion. ^To improve the accuracy of interpolation between grids, a mesh refinement method was adopted to enforce mesh sizes similar at the intergrid boundary regions. ^In this paper, the capability of the overset unstructured grid method is demonstrated and discussed. ^(Author)
